GO TEAM USA!
Yes, yearbook people of 2010, the Winter Olympics are about to begin in Vancouver on Friday, and I for one, will be watching. There's nothing greater to pass away a dreary February day than with a few hours of elegant figure skating followed by some heart-stopping bobsledding.
However, the scandals are already beginning in Vancouver before the Olympic torch is officially lit. Spend some time reading some of your favorite news sites and see if you can identify at least two of potential Olympic scandals. Summarize the scandal and be sure to provide your source of information.
Follow the Olympic coverage throughout the next few weeks by either actually watching the events or reading the headlines in the news...more blogs on this most wonderful time of year to come. :)
One potential olympic scandal is that the British ski and snowboard federation has gone bankrupt, but the national Olympic committee says athletes will still compete in Vancouver. The British Olympic Association said that it will put in place a contingency plan to make sure the 14 skiers and snowboarders on the team can participate. She also failed a drug test.
ReplyDeleteAnother potential scandal is that Germany's teams may not do as well as they had planned. The banning of speed-skater Pechstein for doping will damage the chances of medals as the 37-year-old has the experience of five Olympic gold medals under her belt from each of the last four games.

1. The first "scandal" I saw was of the two Russian ice skaters who did an aborigional routine. Australian people became offended, and the Russian pair says they researched the dance type online, and the woman's dog (yes... her DOG) picked out the music. (BBC News)
ReplyDelete2. Another scandal I saw was of a group of women going to Canadian court to fight the ban that has been put on their sport, the ski jump. Men are allowed to compete, but women are not simply because the Intenational Olympic Comittee says that their version of the sport has not been developed enough. The group of 15 women believe that their natural rights are being violated if they're not allowed to compete. (BBC News)
1. Apparently, the British ski and snowboard federation has gone bankrupt but will still compete in the Olympics. The team needed to raise $326,000 by January to keep from going bankrupt.

2. Many Canadians disapprove of the games being held in Vancouver. The protesters say the will be loud but peaceful. The protesters are angry that security has cost almost $609 million, which is four times the original estimate. Many feel the money should of been spent elsewhere, such as in schools, or for healthcare. Some citizens of Vancouver have said that the city is being turned into "a police state".
