Overkill in the Media, Undercoverage and Just for Fun

(1) Think about what stories are currently dominating the headlines. (If you don't know, you have access to the Internet and hundreds of online newspapers.) What current news stories are receiving TOO MUCH attention? Support your story with your reasoning for why it's receiving too much attention. Why do you believe the news outlets are focusing so much on this story?

(2) On the flip side, what news event is not receiving the coverage you feel it should? Again, explain your reasoning.

(3) What news story did you discover today that is just intriguing to you? (Remember Coty's discovery of the lady who is trying to be the largest woman in America from last week? This is what I'm talking about.) Provide a link to your story and explain why it grabs your attention.

  1. 1. Tiger Woods. I think that when a celebrity does anything, whether it is a good or bad thing, they draw so much attention to it. They make it worse then the problem really is and I think they don't have anything that Tiger Woods has ever done except golf, so they dont have anything to talk about concerns them.

    2. I don't have a real specific answer for this, but like events that have happened, there aren't many updates on what happened to the people or the area that the event happened in.

    3. http://current.com/news/92339419_legalizing-drugs-will-lead-to-more-of-this-mother-trades-daughter-for-drugs.htm

A woman in Michigan let a 67 year old man have sex with a 10 year old girl, that she was taking care of in exchange for drugs. This story caught my attention. It's horrible that someone would sell a little girl for drugs. No matter how much you think you need the drug, you shouldn't have to sell a girl for it.

  2. 1) We are hearing so much about this health care bill that we don't even know if it's going to pass. I don't want to hear anymore about it until they have made a decision. It's receiving a lot of attention because, yes, it is a big change. I deserves to be talked about. But not this much.

    2) I think we need to hear more about those full body scanners that TSA is attempting to put on all international flight's security. There has been one story since it dominated the headlines. This story is about the man who was caught "ogling" over a coworker's scan and is now being faced with charges. Yeah, those photos are deleted.

    3) "Would-be teen robber asks teen not to tell mom." I laughed so hard at this becasue it's so funny to think that someone who attempted to rob someone with a knife is worried about his mom finding out. Wow.

  3. 1. I think all of the healthcare news is a bit overkill. Yes, it is a big deal and we should voice our opinions. But it passed, and those against it should work on adapting and changing it rather than just complaining. All it is doing is causing conflict.
    2. The news story i just saw that I hadn't heard before was one about the UK intercepting the Russian bombers. I think that this story definitly deserves more news, as the article says that Moscow's war machines are become increasingly more bold. This tension needs to be reported.
3.The story about Sarah Palin getting a tv show on TLC about Alaska caught my eye. I think it's weird for a politician to transfer into a travelogue series host, and a little attention seeking.

  4. (1) One story that is getting to much attention is the one about jesse james and sandra bullock. Jesse has apparently had an affair on Sandra. But that was his choice and their marriage. I dont see why so many people would be intrested in this story. It is kinda double overkill because the whole thing with tiger woods and his multiple affairs just started to leave the top story of the media.

    (2) There is a story that should be on the front of all newspapers though; the Health Care fix-it Bill Headed Back to House. this story affects so many people, but the media is not showing it the way they should.

    (3) One thing that i found interesting today is a story on legalizing pot. Not only is it a decision for california but rhode island and Nevada too. I thought it was really funny how the spokeswomen for Californians for Drug Free stated "We are quite concerned that by legalizing marijuana, it will definitely lower the perception of risk, and we will see youth use go through the roof." Eevn with that said, the state is still trying to legalize the substance. It is just very suprising overall.

  5. 1.) A man charged in hit and run death of a 13 year old girl. Has not pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. The 13 year old Madalynn Matlock was walking along Old Kentucky 54 near Philpot on march 6 when Madalynn was strunk by a ford bronco. Madalynn died march 10 at a Louisvill hospital.
2.)I think more of the people that is doing to other people and every county.
3.)I think it would be the smallest horse in the world. Because when you see a picture of a horse and the smallest horse i think that is just so weird about it and i just think that is nomal and there is not a thing wrong about it and some people are like that too.

  7. 1. I think that an overkill story is the story saying that Obama is the anti-christ. I feel as though this story is recieveing too much attention. I belive that the news outlets are focusing on this story so much because it is very interesting to hear that people have this view.
    2. I feel as though the story about legalizing marijuana in California and Rhode Island is not recieveing enough attention. I feel as though this story is interesting and could affect a lot of people and that the nation should be informed more about this topic so the nation will be able to make their own opinions about this topic.
    3. There is a story that talks about a man in China who was stabbed in the head with a 10 inch knife because he cheated on a video game. The other gamers got very mad when the man hacked into the game and rigged it so that he could have the top score. These guys are true gamers

  8. 1. The health care reform has been dominating the head lines. Where ever you turn, views and thoughts about the health care reform are plastered all over the place. I think the fact that the health care reform is controversal among Americans brings it to the front lines of the media. However i feel it deserves this media attention due to the large affect this has on America.
    2. A woman trades her daughter for cocain. i think this is a rather big injustice that has recieved a low amount of Media. A woman allowed a 67 year old man to have sex with ehr 10 year old child for cocain. I really don't understand how people are not outraged with this. Selling a child for drugs is completely sickening! I believe that if this recieved more media attention, the punishment to this man and woman would be more harsh.
    3. I think the fact that Sarah Palin will be having a show on TLC is rather interesting, mainly because i find it odd that a polititian has been sweeping the media with television shows as well as her heading title in the Woman of Joy conference. I must say i'm not a big fan of the cross from government to global sensation. I don't feel this is Sarah Palin's posistion in the world.

  9. 1) I think that coverage on Sandra Bullocks, or any celebrities marital affairs (ex. Tiger Woods), gets entirley to much news coverage. It's not like it hasn't happened to many people before. There is no need to analyze why people cheat on their spouses because it is nothing new and does not really affect the lives of anyone outsie of the relationship.
No celbritiy needs to give the public an apology, or explaination for what happens in their home.
2)The Iraq/ Afganistan war does not recieve enough coverage. Though mentioned occasionally it is never the focus. The war is still going on but, the public is not recieving all the facts. They hear about everything with Tiger Woods affair, but barley anything about what is happening in the war.
3)An Afgan suicide bomber was killed by locals before he could detonate the explosives strapped to him. It happened in the Afghanistan Ghazni province, the suicide bomber was from Pakistan. The locals threw stones at him and slahed him with knives.

  10. 1. News that's recieving too much attention is the story about Sandra Bullock and Jesse James. People are interested because of the infidelity and poor oblivious Sandra. The fizzling of the Tiger Woods scandal may also contribute to it. People want new gossip.

2.One news story that doesn't seem to have a lot of attention now, but I think will become popular soon is one about the Catholic priest that abused children in the 1950's, but was never reprimanded by the church after reports of his crimes surfaced nearly 20 years later. The Pope's involvement in the "investigation" is still questionable.

    3. A story that grabbed my attention is one where a girl was beat by a 15 year old boy she didn't even know all because she offended him in a text. This is intriguing because in all honesty... Who does that??

  11. Toyota! All you see and hear about on the news is about Toyota recalls. News healdlines this story because it majorly effect the economy and American and Japanese peace. They cover it because its not a American owned company so sales in GMC are raising bringing more money back into our economy. Auto makers such as Hyundai look up to Toyota in this mess to see what their future ,as another contry owned car company, will be. What should be shown is how many Toyota owners have lied about the event of their cars speed in order to file a false law suit and get some money. Also they should address how unfair there being treated just because it is a Japanese owned company.http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/?page_id=9798&paged=53

  12. 1. The Health Care bill has been recieving way too much coverage. I understand that this is going to make a huge impact of the country but it has been in the news for months and months. It has even become a subject of many facebook controversies.
    2. I feel as though the news does not inform Americans enough about the happenings in Cuba or in North Korea. These countries are direc threats to our nations safety, not just the Taliban. We need to stay informed on these countries. Not just the governmant.
3.I found an article where people are "unplugging" for the sabbath. They are avoiding technology and connecting back into the real world. I think this is a wonderful idea because I know too often that I am way too involved into my phone.

  13. I think that the whole health care deal is becoming way to big of an issue. Yes I agree that it is a big issue in our country but i think the media is buzzing by other important stories in order to talk about the health care decisions.
A story I believe needs more coverage is the story of a woman who wrecked yesterday in Georgetown. I was very concerned and have not herd anything since.
