Be sure to answer ALL parts of the question. Blog responses will not receive credit for partial responses.
1. In your opinion, is school spirit in decline, increasing or staying the same OVERALL at SCHS? Support your response with examples.
2. What are the causes for either a decline or an increase in school spirit here? Be specific.
3. Conduct some online research. Is a decrease in school spirit a national trend? Cite your source of information. (This will require some digging. Info it out there, but it doesn't show up as the first hit on a google search.)
1. I think that school spirit has stayed the same. The same people care and the same people do not care. People are not really too worried about school activities. They would rather hang out with friends doing something else rather than going to a game.
ReplyDelete2. School spirit has stayed the same because the same people care. if anything, it would be in a decline because high school kids could honestly care less about how their school does in sports. If it ends up being a way to get out of school, then great. If not, people don't really care.
3. Yes, it is. There are less and less people in the crowds at high school sports games. There are less people wearing their school colors and participating in school activities. Overall, high school students are not caring anymore.

1. I think the school spirit is declining because less people attending games. Also, people are not as excited when we reach championship games.
ReplyDelete2. I feel that a major cause of decline is the reccession, which causes most people to not obtain enough money to attend games. Also, I have heard from others that they are turned off by the idea of attending games because of the special treatment athletes in our school earn. Another cause for decline in school spirit may be that the interest in sports is also declining, and less traditional sports are becoming more popular.
3. Yes, because areas widespread are trying to think of creative ways to atract students due to recent failures to attend games, homecoming, etc. As stated in the article on the first link, attendance to homecoming week dropped by a thousand paid attendees. In the second article, the Dean's council tries to form an event that will attract students and heighten the school spirit they have, because it was low at that point.

1. I think that Scott County's school spirit has declined. We always seem to support the boys in whatever sport it may be because people say that "girls aren't as good as boys" or "they aren't as fun as boys", but I don't see that. I think the girls are just as good as the boys.
ReplyDelete2. People that go to the games, they don't support the teams by going to more then one or two games. Most of practices or school related activites are cancelled because they want you to be able to go to the games. I can see if you don't like a sport but not supporting the teams at all, isn't very helpful to the players.

This article states the opinion of someone at a school in the Barrington School District. The stated that they are not trying to push people into following their school's teams. They said that their students go to "big" games, games that people say "really" matter. They also said that people don't always have the money to go to every game with the prices being from $3 to $10.
1. I think that the teachers who went to school here remember a time when the spirits were high, so in that respect yes it is. But I've never known scott county to be very spirited. At NGHS, I went to every home football game and our section was crammed with people. At SCHS, no one I kow ever wants to go to any of the games, so I just don't go. That hasn't changed since I've been here.
ReplyDelete2. I guess people are just busier. I know I am. Honestly, I think it's embarrassing that Mr. Kovington is bribing people just to go to a girls basketball game.
3. Overall, I think students have just become busier with things unrelated to school.

1. I think that school spirit is in a bit of a decline at SCHS. However, it wasn't during the football season. For football we had pep rallies etc, basketball gets nothing. I don't see why all the blame rests on us, the students, when the faculty complaining isn't making any effort besides yelling at us to make effort. It's a vicious circle. Although, giving students a free day off school does help motivate the students.
ReplyDelete2. I think the decline would be caused by overall lack of the student's affection. Many students honestly don't like this school, or care about the sports. Why would they want to show spirit for a school they wish they didn't go to? If there was more spirit in the past, maybe it is because the school as a whole has declined in quality over the years.
3. I think that school spirit is on a national decline, because there are many websites that schools have made, questioning why the students have lost their spirit, such as this one : http://bhsroundup.com/2010/02/23/what-bhs-pride-do-we-lack-school-spirit/. I think the decline may be due to all of the other things going on in kid's lives. They have so many different forms of entertainment and communication that they see no point in going to basketball game etc.
1. In my opinion school spirit is staying the same, i dont have schoool spirit just because im not a sports fan and i just wanna graduate but there are some people that alot of us can name that keeps the little school spirit we do have alive.
ReplyDelete2. I think that the reason that it is staying the same is because as it gets closer to the end of the eyar people are not really interested with stuff that heppans here we just wanna hurry and pass the time, besides no many people actually like school so why support it?
3.http://www.questia.com/googleScholar.qst;jsessionid=LZvW2XjyZJ8vd1QBLqdnyhnxLXXLhZRlqL8DRQLWJZHq8SDKPwQ9!-518558411!742347710?docId=5001373454
this tells how kids have started spending alot more time doing things that are not related to school and other getting invited so it causes the decline.
1. I guess that i feel that it is kind of declineing in a way. For one reason you think that we would have a pep rally now that we have the girls and boys both going to the sweet 16.
ReplyDelete2. Causes for a decline in school spirit would probally because we dont really do anything that is school spirit related in any way, we dont have any pep rallys and when we have spirit week we dont really advertise it that well.
3. I looked up the importance of school spirit and was looking how some schools have tons and one paper said that their school spirit is lacking. (http://amherststudent.amherst.edu/current/opinion/view.php?year=2009-2010&issue=09§ion=opinion&article=01)
1. In my personal opinion, i think school spirit is on the decline. I remember years back being a freshman or even sophmore year, we always had big fun pep rallys, now i can't remember the last one we had.
ReplyDelete2. I think there is lack of school spirit because we don't have many pep rallys and we lack much merchandise. In Franklin County, they don't have a very good team but their students are very active in supporting their school. Why? because they have a pep rally before every game and sell so many t-shirts.
3. At BHS, in Hersey, pennsylvania, there is something happening there much like what is going on here. Over the past couple years, their school spirit has declined. One reason is because they are the only school in the county. (Much like us) so they don't have any real close rivals.
In my personal opinion I seriously believe that it depends on the event. I highly believe that we have ten times more school spirit for boys sports than girls sports. For example when the boys went to the sweet 16 a few years ago we went all out had a pep rally and everything. For the girls on the other hand we didnt have anything this year. They have made it very far and I strongly believe that there should have been something dione to wish them good luck and recognize their achievement. As far as the cause I believe that people just dont seem to care much about their high school teams anymore especially for girls teams. I really believe that everyone including faculty is acting like the girls game is no big deal which I believe is a little bit sexist. According to http://www.nata.org/newsrelease/archives/000400.htm cheerleading has increased by 18 percent since 1990. This involves alot of school spirit so I am pretty sure that our school is simply facing a non school spirit plague.
ReplyDelete1)I believe that there is a decline in school spirit at SCHS because the student body doesn't seem to really take the accomplishments of the school as somthing to celebrate.
ReplyDelete2)We have done so well in many areas that no one really expects to get worse. Also the school dosen't really encourage as mmuch spirit through posters and pep rallies as they used to.In Freshmen year there was always a pep rally every few months that were kind of interesting, this year we have had 1. Now school spirit is more like a joke.
3)There were many articles on how to increase school spirit, this tells me that there are many schools having trouble generating school spirit from their student bodies.

1. School spirit is pretty much stagnit at this point. We have no school spirit and it has stayed the same for my high school carree. Being spirited is seen as "uncool" so no one goes to EVERY game dressed up and painted up. They would get made fun of and be seen as different and no one here wants to be different from every other fish in this great pond known as Scott county High School.
ReplyDelete2. Like I said, we all just want to be able to look in a mirror and see what EVERYONE else sees. So no one is going to go out of thier way to be different. Even this pep bus is something that has lost school spirit. We couldn't get enough people to go on it to have a drawing. and those people that did sign up to go on it are just skipping school, going with friends, or "supporting" the team.
3. According to an older school newspaper who did weeks worth of research on the subject of school spirit found that people having jobs, the larger class sizes, and differences in schedules has caused a lack a school spirit. Even buying yearbooks, class rings, going to games, and even prom attendence has gone down through the years.
1. I feel that school spirit is declining. I'm in band , and whenever we have be there to support our teams during the games some people (and yes, I'll admit I do too) feel like it's a chore to be there.
ReplyDelete2. I think a cause of decline in the school spirit is technology. People used to go to games to see their friends, but with cellphones and the internet we can stay in contact easier. Gas prices have also risen, and we can't afford to go all the way to Bowling Green just for a basketball game.
3. I see nationally an increase in attendance at sports games, but a decrease in the fine arts programs.

As new generations of students grace the halls of SCHS, what is happening to our school spirit? I would say that the steady decrease has become more and more noticible and apparent! The amount of people going to various sporting events is dwendling. "Back in the old days" as my mother was in high school, the high schools sporting events were the main cool thing to do, it was combined with a social, dances for sports victories were much more common, and being affiliated with your high school was a thing to take pride in. Maybe the students of Scott County High School have found better things to do that are more centered around themselves rather than time spent supporting fellow class mates. Some support may have been lost due to our large school size, a lot of the people on the basketball team are not familiar with the student body. A lot of the support i would say has been lost with our generation, the old fashioned appeal of supporting winners of the school and speaking about the game in class has sadly transitioned into who had the best party last weekend and how drunk and high everyone was. Throughout the united states, schools are experiencing a lack of school spirit, people are no longer ingrossed in their own schools. (http://media.www.whartonjournal.com/media/storage/paper201/news/2002/03/04/Perspectives/Lack-Of.School.Spirit.Leaves.Wharton.Bereft-195526.shtml) People are now more concerend about other events that rank more important to them.
ReplyDelete(1.)I think their should still be school spirt in schools. And i think that is a good thing to have. (2.) I think they still should do school spirt.
ReplyDelete(3.) im not for sure about this one.
1. I beleive that school spirit is decreasing, extremely. I remeber when i first came to this school and there was so much sprirt but now the only people who really even care are those on a big time sports team.
ReplyDelete2. I think the reason for the extreme decrease in school spirit is the fact that some of the sport players tells people not to come and support them. and The school dont really do anything to pep the kids up for a game. Maybe that is just me, but that is what i think caused it.
3. I think that some small schools have all the pride they need, but when its a bigger school they lack it. Because there is a bigger percentage of people that dont care. Smaller school are more involved with their students, for example here at scott county there are so many of us students we dont feel like there is any help or support from the teachers.
