Over spring break, I had the chance to finally see an episode of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on ABC. Oliver, a celebrity chef from the Food Network, chose the town in the US that had the highest percentage of child obesity to come in and redo their school lunches. His goal is to eliminate the processed "junk" (his words) such as breakfast pizza, chicken nuggets and french fries from the menu and replace it with whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits. He also gives high school students cooking lessons, since he believes preparing meals at home instead of going to fast food chains will lead to weight loss, or at least prevent weight gain.
Answer the following questions.
1. What are your thoughts on his efforts? Would improving school lunches be enough to turn childhood obesity around? Why or why not?
2. Visit the website for The Food Revolution http://www.jamieoliver.com/campaigns/jamies-food-revolution/school-food. Click on the link for the PDF file that contains 2 weeks worth of menus for school lunches. Do you believe high school students would enjoy these? Why or why not? Consider the entire menu--not just the main entree.
3. Of the lunches, which do you believe would be received as the favorite? the least favorite?
1. His efforts are noble, but will not neccesarily work. Children will continue to eat junk food, only outside of school instead. It is natural that children gravitate towards the foods that are advertised which aren't very healthy.
ReplyDelete2. I think high schoolers will enjoy the food because it is so diverse. It has food that can be offered for vegetarians as well as students who like meat.
3. I would definately go for the beefy nachos with grated cheese, lettuce, etc. YUM! My least favorite would be spaghetti with meat sauce because I hate spaghetti.
1. I like the fact that Jamie is trying to help with child obesity. It's wonderful if everyone had the same outlook that he has. Although I think this is a great idea, I don't think that just helping on school lunches will help. Most overweight children have parents that are overweight or that just give them whatever food they want. Most children spend most of their time out of school and if children are just getting a better meal at school then it might change the outlook on some children but not a big percentage.
ReplyDelete2. I think that some high school students would like the new menu, but if some kids are just use to the chicken nuggets and hamburgers like at our schools, then the change will be something totally different and not cope with it very well at first, but I think after a while they would.
3. The favorites would be the pizzas, almost everyone loves pizza. The least favorites would be the stews or pot pies, just because we are not use to these things and they are a change from our normal meals.
1. I think that his efforts are good and well intended. Improving school lunches would not be enough to turn around childhood obesity though it is a start. The way people eat is a lifestyle choice, students eating one or to meals at school is not enough to make them obese. The correct eating habits should start at home.
ReplyDelete2.I do think that high school students would enjoy these meals because they sound good as long as they look good the students would probably eat it.
3.The pizza would probably be the favorite because it is recognizable to students. The least favorite would probably be the sausege bean stew because of them all that sounds the least appealing.
1. His effort towards trying to stop child obesity is very great, yet i dont feel it would really take care of the problem. Because the children have to actually eat the foods and like what they are eating.
ReplyDelete2. I feel that the high school students would enjoy this menu, they have really great yet healthy tasting foods, you have your veggie your fruit and meat and starch, yet it taste good.
3. Probally the pizza and the least would be sausage and bean stew.
1. I feel that his effort is appreciated, but at the same time it's not enough to combat childhood obesity. I think that exercise programs in gym class should be strengthened and improved as well. Kids need exercise and maintaining a healty weight is near impossible with shows like Spongebob Squarepants on nickelodeon. Who would rather workout than watch T.V.? I believe that what Jaimie Oliver's doing only combats half of the childhood obesity problem.
ReplyDelete2. I think as a whole, high school students wouldn't enjoy this menu. It seems somewhat similar to what is being served to us already, and we don't like that stuff either. Many students sneak out of school during lunch and go to a fast-food place like McDonald's or Taco Bell... Not that I would know firsthand or anything. I think the yogurt on the menu would be accepted though.
3. I think the most accepted would be the spaghetti with meat sauce, caesar salad, and yogurt. I think the least favorite would be the sausage and bean stew, honey carrot coins, and cheesy cornbread.
1. I think this is a positive turn to how students look at nutrition and food health, also school lunch alone. It would provide a start to providing a healthier generation but it would take everyone to step in and help make this change in order to be enough to turn childhood obesity around.
ReplyDelete2. yes, I believe kids would enjoy REAL food. But also to make this work I think there needs to be more than one thing to choose from each day. Give a variaty and give selection to non meat eaters.
3.I believe the beef stew will be very liked just for the fact it aint chicken or pizza..least favorite will prob be the pie thing. whats even in it anyway??
1. I think that while Oliver's efforts are admirable, and may start a good foundation for the prevention of childhood obesity, it is not enough to completely stop the problem. Children eat 2 meals away from school each day. Just the improvement of lunch isn't going to change the child's lifestyle.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, I do believe that high school students would like the menu. Even though it doesnt contain fried foods, it has foods that taste good but have nutrition content.
3. I think that the "double thick cheesy pizza" would be the favorite, as pizza is a popular food among teens. The "mac and cheese with broccoli" would most likely be the least favorite because it is a vegetarian meal.
1. I think his goal is a great goal to have. Although i dont beileive that changing the school lunches will turn childhood obesity around i do beleive it will make a good start for a revolution to turn childhood obesity around. The school lunches is a meal that first off alot of kids dont partake in. meani g even if they change the menu the chances of kids eating are still low. You have to remember most, not alll, teenagers are lazy and layed back and dont really think about what they eat at the time.
ReplyDelete2. In all honesty the lunch is not that appealling. Most of the lunches up there do not interest me even if they were healthy. So I dont think the students as a whole would like this lunch schedule. You dont hear student say of I want home-style beef stew or the Sloppy Joes.
3. The best thing on that menu is the spaghetti with meat sauce, whole wheat rolls, ceasar salad with crunchy croutons, strawberry yogurt and fruit. Its the most appealing and sounds like a good idea. Most people would not be willing to try either of the stews or the shepards pie. Stew is not in most peoples lunch schedule. and I have never heard anybody mention shepards pie. Apple pie or something of that nature sounds more pleasing.

2.) I think kids would love this menu. The main dishes sound very delicious and the side dishes sound ten times better than soggy old fruit and mystery beans haha. If the school changed to this menu then not only would they be helping with obesity but the school would also make more money because the students would be more drawn to buying a school lunch.
ReplyDelete1.)As far as Jamie Oliver's efforts go I think he is doing an amazing thing. I do believe a change in a school menu is not enough to eliminate the obesity that has overcome children but I do believe its one step closer in our effort to control it.
3.)I believe that wednesdays menu on week one is a favorite. Everyone loves chicken and you get many sides with it as well as a salad. I believe that Thursdays menu would be the least favorite for the simple face it is small and the main dish is pizza and we already have pizza everyday.
1.) I think it would because Jamie Oliver has a good ideal of the breakfast stuff but i think they should have a more healtly meal in the morning and inteal of pizza or chicken nuggets in the morning time.
ReplyDelete2.)I think the high school students would like it because the food would be good and i think it would be heatly than pizza or something like that. The students would be eating good food inteal of junk food.
3.)I think the most heatly choice for this week for the high school students would be week one because i think week one would be a good choice for the high school students and it would be heatly for us and them. But i week two is ok also but i just like week one and i know the meanu for week one as garden salad with ranch dressing everyday of the week and if you eat a healty salad but with a little bit of ranch dressing would be ok as well.
1. Well, I believe it is a good effort and has good intentions. I’m just not sure that it will be as effective as he thinks it will be as quickly as he thinks it will work. I mean, it may create some changes. I’m sure it’s agreed that every little but helps, but I think it will create more of an awareness than results. This can lead to more ideas to prevent and fix obesity, but this event alone may be that obese kids are losing weight at a slow pace. There are other factors that will prevent this from working as well. What you feed your kids at school won’t really matter if parents just keep letting their children gorge on whatever is in the kitchen.
ReplyDelete2. One thing I noticed in the two week meal plan is the yogurt, which is healthy and most students do like it, but the meal plan only provides blueberry yogurt for week one and strawberry for week two. Most people don’t like jus one flavor; I know I do not like blueberry. I believe it would be better to vary the yogurt flavors up and rotate it. That way, students will not have to wait a whole week to get their yogurt in. Another thing I noticed is that in some of the sides there are things added in that could be left on the side so it is optional. For example, The brown rice with carrot and orange dressing has raisins in it and I would not even touch this side at all because of them. I would eat it without the raisins. If they were placed on the side students would eat more of that dish because they can chose whether or not they will place them in the salad. Other than that the main dishes looks very tasty and vary too so that it isn’t boring and continuous.
3. I think Tuesday and Thursday of week two will be the most favorite out of all the dishes. I believe the least favorite will be Tuesday and Friday of week one.
