Read the following story about an alleged incident involving teenagers in Kentucky.

1. Summarize the story by answering who, what, when, where and why.
The story of Cheyenne Williams has received quite a bit of attention due to the nature of the claims. Read a follow up story that appeared on the Herald-Leader's website earlier this week.
http://www.kentucky.com/2010/04/27/1240166/attorneys-gay-teen-willingly-participated.html
2. Do you believe the defendant's claim that Cheyenne Williams was a willing participant? Why or why not? If the girls involved are found guilty of kidnapping, what do you believe would be an appropriate punishment?
3. Do hate crimes exist in our high school? If so, on what level? What could the school do in order to promote more tolerance regarding individual differences and preferences?
1. 3 teens, Schwab, sam and a juvinile were accused of abducting williams in Jackson County and attempted to push her off a cliff at Flat Lick Falls in the beginnins of April 2010. Williams Claims that they did this because of her sexual orientation. The three teens turned themselves in and williams had it all on her cell phone.
ReplyDelete2. Well, It is hard to believe that they kidnapped her but i do believe they would have attempted to push her off a cliff. It's debatable to say whether she was actually kidnapped because it all started that she was going somewhere with her friends willingly. I think in attempt to kill her though it could be consider a lure and they did in reality abduct her. I think they should all recieve jail time for five years or more.
3. I haven't seen many hate crimes in our school but I have seen bullying. Bullying isn't going as far as to commit a crime but could be serious and cause pain on an individual to where it could become dangerous. I have heard of school not allowing same sex couples to attend a prom and I believe it should be allowed. I don't think our school should desciminate any group and we all should be treated as equal no matter race, gender, preferences and others.

1. A gay teen, Cheyenne Williams, was allegedly attacked by three other girls who tried to kill her becasue of her sexual orrientation. The three were charged for a hate crime and are being held in jail.
ReplyDelete2. I would not say that she was a willing participant. I would, however, defend the claim that there is a lot more to this story than they are releasing. There seems to be far too many holes in all parties' testaments. They are adults and need to be tried as such. If they are found guilty, they need to be punished as an adult would.
3. yes, we do. We are not featured on the news, but I would go so far as to say some of the bullying and hurtful things that are said could be tried as hate crimes. It all comes down to personal responsibility. The school can promote open minded thinking, but if the individual is unwilling to committ, nothing will change.
1. Cheyenne Williams, 18 of McKee, was kidnapped by three teens friday. The three teens then tried to push her off a cliff to her death for being homosexual. One of the teens that accomponied in all this could not be released to public due to being a juvinial.
ReplyDelete2. I dont really see how cheyenne would have been willing to go, and it does not really make any since that her friends from younger ages would suddenly turn on her and try to kill her. If the girls indeed did kidnap cheyenne then id throw em in juvie. Point blank. At the same time though it would be for life or anything like that mabey a year or two. Because i think cheyenne and her family are tkaing this a bit out of control and exagerating.
3. yeah duh! of course hate crimes happen at our school. They happen everyday. And most of the time there is not even an actual reason as to why people do it. And they range on all levels. The school probably could not do a thing about it because it had already got out of hand. Even if the school did try to do something it would only last at the most is 2 weeks and then everything would go back to normal.

April 16, 2010: Three girls in Jackson County, Kentucky have been arrested, one a juvenille, for kidnapping and attempted murder after a high school student claims they kidnapped and tried to push her off a cliff. Williams claims she was targeted because she is homosexual. Though Williams was able to escape, she went with the girls willingly thinking they were joking until they started to scare her. Williams videotaped some of the incident on her cellphone, and Schwab and Sams are being held at the Jackson county jail.
ReplyDelete2. I believe Williamswas a willing participant. If she could tape the incident, she wasn't very frightened, and she could have called authorities for help. If these girls are claimed guilty but aren't proven, their punishment should be very light. If there is proof that they did what was said, they should be arrested.
3. Yes, and on a bad level. Many students have been bullied physically as well as cyber bullied on topix. I think we should have more surveys like the seniors did that expose the actions of people in the school in order to point the bullies out.
1. A girl named Cheyenne Williams was abducted and assaulted by her friends on Friday. All of the girls go to Jackson County High School. She says she was attacked by Corinne Schwab, Ashley Sams, and another young lady because she's gay.
ReplyDelete2. I do believe Chyenne Williams was a willing participant. She took a video with her cell phone, and if this was an assault, someone would've got the phone away from her... Or she could've called 911 if she was seriously in trouble. If the girls are found guilty, they should recieve some sort of probation or regulation not prison because I don't think this was a "hate crime" to begin with. A more creative punishment would be making them serve community service in the Kentucky Equality Federation that advocates gay rights. I like this one.
3. I don't think there are serious-enough offenses for anything to be a hate crime in our high school. There are people who tease and exile, but that's about it. Schools should have people learn from examples... Everyone's scared to associate with that person because they're afraid to be exiled as well.
1. a teen girl named Cheyenne Williams 18,was kidnpaed by three girls and tryed to push her off a cliff. Because of her sexual orientation.
ReplyDelete2. I feel that she might of been a whilling participant because she had her phone out and was evadently tapeing it... i mean if this was a reall thing then the girls could have yanked the phone out of her hand and just shoved her off the cliff...or she could have called the fricken 911 person. If the girls are found guilty i belive that they should do some time for their crime in juvie. You do the crime you pay the time, next time i guess you wont kidnap someone will you...
3. yes i do belive that hate crimes do exist in our high school. I feel that the levle is not that high but it is high enouggh for people to get hurt some how either emotionally or mentaly. i feel that they should let someone be how they want to be its their body give them the freedom to express yourself but to a levle. I do feel though of someone is bullying someone else that they should get punished right then and there. Bullying is a very big deal and should not be taken lightly... i feel if someones bullying someone they should be suspended, if it happens again i feel they should be expelled; because bullying of someone could lead to someone hurting there self or moving away.
1. Who: Cheyenne Williams, Corinne M. Schwab, Ashley N. Sams, and another juvenile.
ReplyDeleteWhat: Three girls apparently abducted and tried to push 18 year-old Cheyenne Williams off a cliff
When:April 16, 2010
Where: Jackson County Kentucky near the Flat Lick Falls area.
Why: Because of the girls sexual orientation.
2. I do beleive that she went willingly. They were friends previously to the occurence and she may have honestly thought these girls were just kidding. If the girls are found to be guilty then I feel as though an appropriate punishment would be time in prison. Not more then a year though because of their age and what actually happened.
3. Hate crimes happen more often then reported. No one has ever been killed but they are put through a large amount of abuse. Our school should make everyone more aware of what consequences their actions have to others. And not by just talking to us, but actually getting to everyone.
1. The story was about 3 Jackson county teenagers that "kidnapped" one of their friends, and proceeded to terrorize her because of her sexual orientation. They even tried to push her off a cliff. The girl they kidnapped was Cheyenne Williams. Two of girls that kidnapped her were 18, one was underage.
ReplyDelete2. From what I've read, I find it hard to believe that Williams wasn't a willing participant. She even admitted to it in the beginning. The girls probably got out of control, but Williams got herself into the situation in the first place, with her "friends". But if the video shows that the girls really did abuse her and kidnap her, then I'd believe it. Depending on how bad it is, I would say worst case scenario would be for the girls to endure jail time.
3. I don't really see very many hate crimes in our school. I suppose that they do happen though. To promote diversity among students the school could advertise it more, or have more activities forcing students to interact.
Cheyenne Williams, Connie M.Schwab, Ashley N. Sams, and a 17 year old girl. Cheyenne Williams was kidnaped and was attempted to be pushed off of a cliff due to her 'sexual orientation'. They attempted to push her off a cliff in the Flat Lick Falls area, on April 16th.
ReplyDeleteI think she went up to the cliff and was unaware of what was going to occur, when she realized what was happening, i don't believe she was willingly participating in that. I also find it sketchy that she was able to video tape the incident on her video phone.I think they should endure 2 years probation.
I believe hate crimes in a form exist in our society, mainly because name calling & derogatory sexual comments are often said by people. I really don't think anything can truly be done to stop this mainly because these events happen all of the time and it's someone's word against another.
I agree to that because i think the young teenager just plan it and do bad stuff. I think they should be punishment and be in jackson county jail for a while and i think that is a very bad thing to do something like this. I think they do just a little bit with some young teens.
ReplyDeleteCheyenne Williams, 18, of McKee,filed and signed a criminal complaint Monday, saying she was kidnapped and in life danger on Friday. Corinne M. Schwab, 18, of Sandgap; Ashley N. Sams, 18, of Annville; and a 17-year-old girl who was not identified, was her acclamed kidnappers. The girl clam they kidnapped her because of the fact that she is gay. In the beginning, the girl claimed she thought it was all a joke so she went with them but soon after became scarred.
ReplyDeleteI think she was a willing participant of the whole ordeal. She even stated that she went willingly. The girls must have just done4 something to set her off. if the video says otherwise then they should get 5-10 years on abuse charges. Not kidnapping though.
Yes, to the extent of major Verbal abuse that some kidds amit suicide over. Make it more aware that if you turn them in it is a big deal and will stop.
1. Who: Ashley Sams, Cheyenne Williams, Corinne M. Schwab and a 17 year old who cannot be named
ReplyDeleteWhat: Cheyenne Williams was kidnapped and her life was attempted to be taken
Where: Flat Lick Falls area
When: April 19
Why: Because of Cheyenne's choices
2. I belive that Williams in some way is lieing. It is pretty suspicious that she was able to record the situation but she couldn't dial 911. I do not know if it will be an appropriate punishment because i do not think that we have thw whole story so I am not able to figure out who is guilty.
3. I do not know if there is actual hate crimes happening at the school. I know that people do get teased and nade fun of but I am not sure if there are actual crimes happening. I am not sure either of ways our school could promote more tolerance regarding individual differences and preferences.
1.) In Jackson County Kentucky three teenage girls are charged with kidnapping and attempted murder after another student told police they tried to kill her and kidnap her. Cheyenne Williams told police she was kidnapped friday April 16, 2010 be classmates Corinne M. Schwab, Ashley N. Sams, and a 17 year old girl (juvenile).
ReplyDeleteWilliams claims she was attacked because she was gay.
2.)I do bellieve the defendents claim that Williams was a willing participant, at first. Williams said she was, but became scared and concerned for her saftey. If the girls are found guilty of kidnapping I believe they should be properly tried as adults and sentenced to maybe seven years and community service for the crime. the minimum for the offense is 20 yrs.
3.)I have never seen hate crimes acted out personally, but im sure there is some bullying to a certain degree, but nothing that is to the extreme like this case.
1. This story is stating that three teenaged girls kidnapped 18 year old Cheyenne Williams and tried to kill her. The three teenagers were Corinne Schwab, Ashley Sams, and a juenile that has not been identified. State police stated that the three girls took Cheyenne Williams to the Flat Lick Falls area where she was assulted and tried to push her off a cliff. The three girls said that they did this because of Williams sexual orientation. This incident happened April 16th, 2010.
ReplyDelete2. I do agree with the fact that if Williams was able to record the incident that she would of been able to call 911. I'm not really forsure whether I believe that she was a willing participant in the case. I haven't really heard her side of the story. I think that if the three teens are convicted guilty then they should go to jail, with a high bond amount, so that they can not just be bailed out- they should have to pay for their punishment.
3. I think that to an exstint they exist. I guess it is more about who is causing the hate crime, not as much as to who they are causing it to. For the school to promote more tolerance, I think they just have to make sure that the comments that people say aren't effecting the emotions of the students they are targeting, and if they are then they should jsut not be aloud to say it without getting into some type of trouble.
