This will be the last post regarding school lunches--I promise. However, the headline from the article on this link caught my attention. Read the article and then share your thoughts on whether or not you believe current school lunches are a threat to national security.

School lunches are not a threat to national security. Though kids are becoming increasingly overweight, it is not due to school lunches. People are eating junk food outside of school that are causing them to gain weight. Even if school lunches do contain junkfood, they hardly offer enough food to make you gain weight significantly. If the military sees a problem with overweight people not being able to be recruited, they should slim them down in basic training.
ReplyDeleteNo, i dont think its a threat. The army's job is to train and get the recrutes to the fitness level they need to be. Also how do they know that those young people eat a school lunch? I know a few teens my age that joined the army after dropping out of school.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that school lunches have anything to do with the obesity rate. I think that if students choose to eat school lunches then that's their option. The obesity rate shouldn't be blamed on school lunch. If it is as big as a problem as the article is stating, then maybe there should be a boot camp for everyone wanting to go into the military before they even go through the military training.
ReplyDeleteI think that the trend that is occuring has more to do with the over all increase in laziness throughout the american people rather then just the school lunches that are served to students. Yes, we could be more healthy, but we can also be more active and more involved in staying active and promoting a better lifestyle that isnt based on driving to your neighbors house, driving for food, driving to get EVERYWHERE and sitting on a couch and staring at a television the rest of the time for entertainment. We have all gotten just a little bit more lazy.
ReplyDeleteCurrent school lunches are not a threat to national security because, yet again, the weight problem of todays young people lies in their everyday lifestyles and what they are taught at home not in the one or two meals eaten at school. School food is not a real contributing factor in the weight problem of students.
ReplyDeleteTo an extent, I could see how they would say this, but it's a little ridiculous to say that school lunches are a threat to national security is a bit extreme. Just because they believe kids will grow up and not be able to fight in the army? I think that should be a personal choice, not something the government mandates.
ReplyDeleteWell, Yea school lunches are part of the reason people are not eating healthy and gaining weight, but I do not believe this is the major reason for the American increase in obesity. It is true that obesity is causing more health factors that prevent people to recruit into the military but I think we need to focus more at the home life and food provided at the grociery store.

Well in my opinion I dont feel that the school lunches is really a national threat. But I do feel that some of the things they feed teens are not really a healthy choice. I feel that the reason alot of teens are getting so fat is because of what they eat at there house. You cant just change someones weight by school lunches. They have to do some of the work and watch what there eating at their homes.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the army should place sole responsibility on school lunches. The blame should instead be placed on society itself. Kids go to McDonald's outside of school, mostly because it's cheap for parents and easy to obtain in-between sports games or after school activities. Child obesity doesn't come from the cardboard or mystery meat served at school, it comes from the messages a child recieves about healty choices. There should be nutrition education programs created to teach the children about healty lifestyles, and that can extend outside of school. Calling school lunch a "threat to national security" is a joke. If we only tackle that, I feel we are overlooking other factors that are more important or pressing.
ReplyDeleteI think that the obesity rates are getting rediculous, however, school lunches aren't the only thing to blame. Food habits across the world need to change. Its more the advertisers fault than it is the people in chanrge for school lunches. There are others problems that need to be targeted. I guess if the entire nation becomes obese it would be a threat to national securtiy. So we need to fix it...? Obviously the method we are using now isn't working so we should just try harder.
ReplyDeleteI would say the phrasing of saying that school lunches are a national security problem is drastic, they would definitely have to place blame upon all of the u.s's food sources, including McDonald's, and Burger King, services like this also contribute to the spread of obesity, a.k.a, the United State's threat to national security.
ReplyDeleteI think they need to choose more heathly food for the young childrens. I think more than 9 milion young adults and there percent is 27 of all americans ages 17 to 24 are overweight. I think they should choose more healthy stuff they just junk food all the time.
ReplyDeleteOpinion 1:
ReplyDeleteI personally think school lunch is ruining our youth. We are known for having a strong military and how can we have a strong military if 27% of them can't pass the standards. If we had better school lunches and better food in children's homes, we wouldn't have this problem.
Opinion 2:
Blame the Arabs!...they started it. (layla, i hope you read this)
I think this article is funny and completley pointless. it is a person's decision on what to eat and therefore, the school lunch has nothing to do with it. If they want to eat unhealthy and a lot, they are going to do it regardless. If they want to get in the military then they need to quit eating so much. They know the requirements. If they do not have enough self discipline to stop eating, then they do not need to be in the military. It is extreme to go and say that it is a threat to national security. It is a personal decision and has nothing to do with whether school lunch is healthy or not.
ReplyDeleteI dont beleive this is a national security threat. I think that it is a person decision to be in the military. If they choose not to eat healthy then that is their choice. For these people to say that it is the school lunches causing obesity then mabey they need to take their heads out of the water and look at the mcdonalds that are placed everywhere. And other restaurants, Those are the reasons that so many people are obese. Half the students in school dont even eat the lunch that is provided by the school. So with that being said, this artical was pointless and not thought through.
