Media Ethics

Hopefully you follow the news in some format.  If not, here's my friendly suggestion to start watching the news, listening to a radio news show, or checking out some credible news websites while in this class.

What stories have been in the news lately that you believe should NOT have been covered.  In other words, what crossed the lines and should be considered unethical in your opinion.

Be sure to respond in complete sentences and to answer by Thursday.

  1. I believe the Jesse James and Sandra Bullock story should be left alone. No one in their position would want their divorce and the cheating story's to be posted everywhere. They do have a little girl and now Sandra has a baby boy. That is not fair for the kids either. Recently they have shown Jesse with Kat D Von hanging out and "having a relationship". It's theyre life. If they want people to know they will tell. Keep there privacy up to them,i dont care!!

  2. I believe that some recent news that should not have been covered deals with excess information given to viewers about the president that does not deal with the presidency. From his most recent vacation, to a new remodeling of the oval office, the news covers anything that could possibly happen in the Obama family. News reporters go to far when commenting on presidents clothes when there are more pressing issues at with informing the audience about the hand that need to be discussed.

  3. I think it was about two months ago, up by Stamping Ground a teenager drowned when him and his friends were crossing a creek during a storm. Photos were taken of the boy's friend crying in grief next to the creek where his friend drowned. It was obviously a very private moment, the boy looked devastated, and I thought it was inapproprite to publish such an intimate and private photo.

  4. There are probably two stories that I have seen in the news pately that shouldn't have been covered. One is a story about Obama, and another is a story about Roger Clemens. The story about Obama dealt with whether or not he was a truely Christian or Islamic. I understand that he is out president and it is important to know many things about him, but what religion you are is up to you and you alone. The other story abot Roger Clemens was about him anbd his possible use of steroids. I think the story should have only been reported on if they had solid proof that Clemens had done steriods.

  5. The most recent news that was reported that I don't believe should've been was about a millionare and his girlfriend that had dated over 20 years, had 2 children and then seperated. Now after paying child support after several years the grown children are suing their dad for part of his fortune. I dont think that their mom should've been the one to tell the media because this is a personal issue between the children and their dad.

  6. This morning on the news a police officer who lives in a bad part of town saw that his tires on his truck had been slashed. The news reporter thought that maybe it had been because the people in the neighborhood felt threatened that a police officers was out to catch them. This struck my mom and I as a red flag because there was no need to remind the people in the neighborhood that the police officer WAS there to catch them.

  7. To me, I think the story about how Obama is unamerican because he is an Islamic sympathizer is unethical. I wouldn't like stories like that about me to be all over the internet.

  8. I saw an article on Yahoo! that was talking about Obama's daughters. It talks about how they play tennis and piano, one loves tigers, and the other just got braces and was away at camp most of August...does anyone really care? I think articles like these are pointless. There is nothing in them that has any affect on anyones lives. And what makes them so much different than any other kid in America? I just think they are a waste of time.

  9. The most irritating news reports for me are those centered around the private lives of public officials. This recently came up on a Yahoo article about Obama's daughters. For the most part, their parents try to protect them from paparazzi, although this is difficult because they are the first family and people, for some reason that is beyond me, desire to know their everyday life. These girls are simply trying to grow up and lead as normal lives as possible, but the media refuses to leave the two alone and rather focus on the politics of their father. However, in some speeches, Obama does reveal certain aspects of their lives, which is typical of a proud father. However, the girls do not want the attention, and it has been said that Obama apologized to them because they were embarrassed of something he had said. Because the nature of their everyday personal lives are not relevant to the future of the nation, this aspect of the first family, or at least the daughters, should not be reported on.

  10. I know this isn't super recent, but the whole Tiger Woods thing shouldn't have been covered. It was his own personal business if he cheated on his wife and the public did not benefit from knowing that information. It's just rude to get all up in someone's business when it has nothing to do with anything.

  11. One story that has been in the news lately that I feel is unethical is about a Lexington man who was hit by a trailer while riding his bike. The newspaper showed a picture of the man receiving treatment from paramedics. I feel that was an invasion of his privacy, since his reception of medical care was publicly shown. I also saw a story on the news about a woman who was found guilty of killing her boyfriend's child. A clip of her exiting the courtroom in tears was shown. I think that was unethical because that is a serious, private moment in her life, and the public did not need to see it.

  12. I think that the repeated news coverage on Lindsay Lohan is starting to cross the line. Though reporters argue that they are trying to set an examplle for other teenage girls to stay away from drugs, I feel they are merely enjoying a train wreck happening. Lohan does have a drug problem, and it is an interesting issue, but it is starting to become an issue of privacy with Lohan. This stress caused by reporters may also be one of the causes of her addiction. If reporters would report on her career and the good things she has accomplished, maybe then Lohan will see which path is the right path to follow.

  13. This was last year, but a wide reciever fromt the Cincinatti Bengals died and sportscenter was covering it. First they said he was taking drugs and thats how he fell out of the car, but then they talked about his relationship with his girlfriend. They got into detail about what him and his girlfriend was argueing about in the car and I didn't think they should've took it that far.

  14. My opinion on ethics is that they should not have pictures of accident that in any way show the person or the amount of damage done. I think that they should ask permission to publish any photo or artical. For example: The wreck that sent three to the hospital on Cincinnati Pike. News Graphic has pictures from the crash on there website. I think it is wrong to publish pictures of crashes. I believe it is personal and if they want the photos to be on there they should have to approve it.

  15. I don't feel as though there has really been any news stories lately that have crossed the line. I feel as though our news today is way too censored. We try and make sure that no one gets offended or sees something bad that we forget that there are some things that we can't keep safe from in the real world so why would we try and show people a posative way to act towards bad situations and don't put them through shock when they do witness something that they had been censored from up until that point. However, the article about Bristol Paylan is one that I feel comes closest to crossing the line. It is an article that is all about the drama in this teenage girls already messed up life. This article should have just been left alone. No one gains anything from this article except a longing for more gossip.

  16. Three hasn't to much news I've noticed. That has crossed the line but I did notice on CNN they focused their big "breaking news" story on a that was climbing a 52 story building In California. That made me think do we really have nothing else to talk about, I mean there is this little war in Afghanistan.
