Paying attention to the news is an important part of being a journalism student.
By Thursday, tell me about a hard news story that caught your attention this week. By hard news, I'm referring to something that's meant to inform (weather, political news, product recall, last minute preparation for the Equestrian games, etc.) Avoid a summary of the latest celebrity gossip for this assignment.
Summary the news story in 2-3 sentences and be sure to tell me your source of the news. (It can't be your mom or older brother.)
A Florida pastor has made plans for his church to take part of the burning of Qurans. The burning is ment to be in protest of September 11th. The message the pastor said, is directed towards muslim radicalist.
ReplyDeleteI heard this story on CNN news.
I love the weather. I love my dear friend Cheif Meterologist Bill Meck! I like to read his blogs (not realy but...you know) and watching his daily 8 day forecast (yea this is true...sadly true! My grandparents love lex 18)! It's suppose to be around 80 degrees all week! How wonderful! Okay so its better than this past summer around the 90's degree mark. In a way i am ready for snow but i dont like to slip on ice while trying to get on the bus and everyone is staring at you! Yea that is my worst fear!! I AM tired of all the sweat though! So i cant wait for Bill to announce the snow! This is why we are great friends, he announces snow and we dont have school for a few days!! Also, i was gonna say next tuesday it's gonna be 88 degrees, how about that? For ya'll who dont know that's Dale Junior's car number!
ReplyDeleteA L.A. police invesigation discovered two "mummified" babies. Two women were cleaning out an old storage room in an apartement bulding when they found the remains of two babies in doctor's bags. The babies were probably killed in the 1930's because they were wrapped in newspaper articles from the 30's.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southern island of New Zealand last week. It will cause a 1.4 billion dollar clean-up recovery and as many as 100,000 houses with fatal damage. My source is NewYork Times.
ReplyDeleteA news story that caught my attention this week was about the new Farmer's Almanac that is coming out soon. I find this resource to be very interesting in the information that it provides to farmers and other people who may be interested. I thought it was especially interesting how this book talks of "global cooling" occuring versus global warming that is supposedly occuring.

The news story that i heard about was a minister in Gainsville, Florida wanting to burn copies of the Quran on Septenmber 11th. My source of news was Good Morning America.
ReplyDeleteMy mother and I were watching the Today Show just the other morning and we heard a very disturbing story. There is a church in Florida that wants to hold a burn day where the church burns all Quar'an bibles. Images like these, ideas like these, and actions like these are some of the reasons why outside people do not like Americans. Although we do have the right to burn the book, it is irresponsible and literally stupid to do such a thing.
ReplyDeleteThere was a huge traffic jam in China that lasted at least 10 days and stretched on for at least 60 miles. People were living in their cars, buying food and water from people selling on the sides of the streets. It all started because of construction, and since they have such an abundant amount of people, and it was such a well traveled road, the jam was so bad.
ReplyDeleteFrom the Georgetown News Graphic reported that many automakers reported declines in sales fromm last August. Toyota sales fell 34% from last year, which shows that despite government attempts at helping the recession, the economy still has a long way to go.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Obama has a "great" idea. He is now making plans to construct an infrastructure bank which is expected to 'leverage public money with private funds' (Cnn.com). Many groups criticize Obama's latest idea. Over $2 trillion remain in projects which need funding. This project itself may be one of failure which will set back $2-$4 billion. Though this project will decrease political power within funding, there is still a chance it will not be passed by congress due to the loss of political power.

I read a story about Obama and how everyone is attacking everything he tries to do, especially the Republicans. He refuted the critics in a harsh way for the first time, and it was funny because he used a Jimi Hendrix quote in his speech. It wasn't scripted either, he just said it.
ReplyDeleteA Florida pastor is planning on publicly burning copies of the Quran on September 11, to show his hatred for Islam and his anger over the 9/11 attacks. Many government, military, and religious authorities have condemned his plan as unnecessarily provocative and possibly unconstitutional, and are trying to convince him not to go through with it. Source of the news: Lexington Herald-Leader, Wednesday September 8.
ReplyDeletevoanews: UN Peacekeepers Extend Patrols in Congo
ReplyDeleteThe UN Peacekeepers have gone ahead and extended their stay in the Congo because of the large amount of women and children that have been raped in the past few weeks. The UN has gotten a large amount of critism about this because much of the rapings happened within kilometers of the UN's base.
On the today show two opposing sides debated over the Muslim mosque near ground zero. One side was a congressman who was rallying against the mosque the other was speaking against discrimination of Muslims. It allowed me to look at the situation not just as a civil rights issue and religeous issue but a political tactic being that it only received recent atteion BC of the election coming up.
